The College of New Jersey - Best Places to Study (Freshman Year)

Apparently you're expected to take time from all the stuff going on at college to study. Unless your roommate is completely silent, you have sworn off IM and your neighbors are absent, you’re going to have a difficult time getting actual studying done in your own room. As a result, you will have to seek out alternative study spots, and there are some good ones. When the studying just ain’t happening, the Daily Jolt’s QuadRiot is a great source of procrastination because sometimes you need to go away to come back.  In the mean time here are some great places to cram!

  • Floor Study Room aka “The Lounge”: Got serious work to do? Try your floor's study room. No AIM profiles to check, no ringing phones, and no TV. It's not fun in there all by yourself, but believe in it, you'll get your work done. It’s also nice to be away from the loudness of your floor (and it will be loud…All the time). The one risk is that you will slip back into your room.
  • The Library:  Wait really?  People study in the library?  YES, especially when  you have the TCNJ library at your disposal! It’s brand new, air conditioned, has couches, huge otamons, and four floors so you can find some privacy. Wireless internet is available in the library, but most people bring their Ethernet cords. If bringing a laptop, make sure not to leave it unattended.  There is also a café area where you can snack, but don’t get caught with food anywhere else in the building! It gets super busy around finals though, so when that time of the semester comes around make sure you claim your spot!
  • Singles Room: There are many singles rooms spread around campus.  Chances are you will make a lot of friends freshman year, a lot of which will have different schedules from you.  If you have a particularly annoying roommate or are not able to study in your room, go to a friends single and try to study there.  This will help you in two ways.  There will nobody in the room to bug you and you probably won’t want to be invasive and mess with his/her stuff therefore actually getting your work done.
  • Outside Travers/Wolfe/The Lake/Green Hall: These are great places to find a lovely little grass spot to plot down on and read. When the weather is nice you can find most of your friends outside on a towel or beach chair “working”. Not the most productive spot on campus, but maybe the most enjoyable way to study. You won't feel like you're wasting a gorgeous day sitting inside studying. Bring a blanket and you can enjoy a nice spring day and study at the same time. Just watch out for the Frisbees.

The College offers great tutoring located on the first floor of Forcina Hall. There is a language lab to help with your foreign language, a writing workshop for one on one evaluation of your papers, and student tutors for any class you can imagine. Pop in and make an appointment whenever you have an assignment coming up or just need some help.
