Johnson & Wales Gems & Traditions
Remember those campus visits that you slept through in the Pepsi Forum or TACO center. While you were sleeping you may not have caught that you ride the city transit for free. Take advantage of this! There are many neat places in Providence that are only a bus ride or walk away. Here are a few:
The Providence Place Mall: Only a walk away but if you’re lazy or its winter take the Gold Line Trolley. This mall has three floors, a food court, and everybody’s favorite restaurant/bar/arcade: Dave and Buster’s, a regular theater and an IMAX theater.
Thayer Street: Located near Brown University, Thayer Street is one of the most eclectic hangouts in Providence. Thayer offers many restaurants, unique gift and clothing shops, ice cream shops an independent theater, bars, and clubs. If you’re broke some of the best entertainment can be found from the girl in the bright red shoes, with rainbow socks, a flowers printed skirt, and a striped t-shirt wearing five pig tails. Cheap and good food on Thayer includes the Craperie, which is open till 3am, and Gordito’s Burrito and Antonio’s which are located in the same building. To get to Thayer take the 35, 78, 40, 42, or the Green Line Trolley that either reads Fox Point or Eastside Market Place. Thayer Street is the first stop out of the tunnel.
Federal Hill- If you live at Renaissance it’s just a walk to Atwells Avenue, if not take the Green Line that reads, “Federal Hill” or the 26. “Little Italy” is known for it’s famous restaurants and if you’re looking for cheap food late at night try Sicilia’s, which is open and also delivers till 2am and nothing is more satisfying and fattening that their stuffed pizza!
Bank of America Skating Rink- Think there’s nothing to do because it’s winter in the city? Think again. For a small fee you can loopy on the ice rink located at Kennedy Plaza or you can buy a season pass.
The Arcade-Don’t know what you want to eat but you know you don’t want the mysterious stomach aches associated with school food anymore? Try The Arcade on Westminster Street. The Arcade features a selection of restaurants, including Johanson’s Bakery (Johnson &Wales’ own bakery, good stuff to bring home to mom and pop dukes!), Café La France (Which is strangely cheaper than the one next to PPAC and has lunch and breakfast specials), Villa Pizza, Pick Pockets, as well as Greek and Chinese food. On the second floor there are many little shops to browse.
There are also many concerts preformed at the Dunkin Donuts Center and Lupo’s. Performers this year so far included: 311, Wu-Tang Clan, Method Man, Mobb Deep, Badfish, Reel Big Fish, and Talib Kwali to name a few.
The Dunk is also home to the Providence Bruins, and sometimes there is nothing greater than a good hockey fight.
You can also catch up and coming Boston Red Sox players by watching
the Pawtucket Red Sox.
The beginning of the year always start off
with family weekend which is usually during Columbus Day weekend. In the
past JWU went to King Richard’s fair and ate barbaric proportions of turkey
legs. This years theme is Vegas baby.
Wildcat Wahoo- Typically during Spring Week this event start
off with a free carnaval and ends with a concert. Past performer include:
112, Papa Roach, Common, and Sean Paul.
Sno Ball- A great formal event kicked off at the end of winter
term and usually held at the Westin.
Greek Life- No college is complete without it’s Greek Life.
Whether you love them or love to make fun of how silly those Greek letters
or those frat and sorority kids are they will be around for the next four
years of your college career.
