University of Maine Gems & Traditions
Soma 36 – The upper levels of The Bear Brew Pub, a restaurant known for their brick oven pizzas, has been converted into the club Soma 36. The club includes a dance floor and bar on the second floor, and pool tables and seating area on the third floor. Although you usually have to be 21 to enjoy the club, every Wednesday night is Open Mic Night – $5 for individuals under 21– which is a great chance to check out fresh talent in a hip after hours lounge. To read more about their open mic night, click here. Soma 36 is located on 36 Main Street.
Old Town Bowling Center, 156 Center Street in Old Town – Just a short cab ride away, these bowling lanes are a cheap way to procrastinate or kill some free time. A bar and grill, billiards, air hockey, and video games are amongst the other forms of entertainment.
Webster Park – Right on the Waterfront in Orono, this scenic park has a gazebo and holds concerts in the spring and summer. Take advantage of the warm days and go for a picnic.
On-Campus Fun – The University of Maine understands fun. There are activities planned for students every day of the week. The University Credit Union is a center that has a food court and Starbucks, and on nights and weekends they will host comedians, have karaoke nights, or show the latest movies. Watch the events page of the Jolt and check in regularly for events being held at the Union.
Bangor – The BAT bus system runs from the University of Maine Campus (leaves right from the University Credit Union), and can take you to the town of Bangor. You will find a mall and restaurants around here, and is great if you want to escape the Orono scene for a day.
The Basement of Pat’s Pizza – The original Pat’s Pizza
(which has now become a chain) is in Orono. And while the affordable food
is a plus, the best part is the fireplace in the basement – or “The Tap Room”.
The cozy setting and big screen television provide the perfect atmosphere
to catch your favorite sports game when it is 20 below outside. http://www.downtownme.com/patspizzaorono
One of the greatest U Maine traditions is BANANAS. He is the Maine Black Bear Mascot. I suppose another one is Maine Day, where everyone on campus is given the day off to spring clean around the grounds. Great fun- particularly the lunch barbecue.
